My Life In Travel – Steven Usher – World First Website Management

As part of the Website Management team that has endeavoured to bring you this blog in conjunction with the main site, I have the honour of providing the first post-proper. In this post I am answering some questions put to me by another of the Website Management team Jamie Payne, who you will no doubt hear from in the near future.

First Holiday Memory?

I must have been 7, maybe 8, and my parents had taken me to Butlins in Minehead, not exactly St Lucia but enjoyable nonetheless! It was the last day, and I had saved all my spending money from the whole week just so I could buy a baseball cap from the gift shop. I only wore it about 3 times after I got home.

Favourite Place In The British Isles?

Easy, the South-West UK. No particular area, just the South-West in general, Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Dorset. It’s where I’m from and I’ll always hold it dear. At no point am I ever an hour or so from a beach and a potential surf.

Ideal Travelling Companion?

My girlfriend. We have very similar interests when travelling, and always seem to fancy switching from a walk to a glass of wine at the same times. Failing that, Darwin would have been an amazing companion.

Beach Bum, Culture Vulture, or Adrenaline Junkie?

A mix of all three. An ideal day would take in some surfing, a visit to a museum, and ending up in a bar somewhere with live local music.

Greatest Travel Luxury?

Baby wipes.  We don’t have children, but there is no place on earth that can’t benefit from having baby wipes to hand in the event of a lack of washing facilities.

Holiday Reading?

I will usually read up on the local area while en-route. Also, in the 21st century I am now never more than a press of a button away from the news on my phone.

Where Has Seduced You?

I was surprised by the simple beauty of Luxembourg during a brief stop, and the architecture of Bruge is incredible, but anywhere in the south of France has the ability to knock me for six.

Better To Travel Or Arrive?

Travel. Even the UK trains are amazing. I once went to Wroclaw in Poland via a plane ride to Berlin and 10 hour train journey through some of the most glorious landscapes I’ve seen, and I loved every second of it. That was probably helped by the fact is was snowing heavily, but it was still as incredible as the visit itself.

Worst Travel Experience?

You can’t have bad travel experiences, just one that aren’t as good as others. Having said that, I am yet to have my bags lost at an airport, touch wood. I did once have to sit in a car for 12 hours back from Frankfurt listening to Rod Stewart on repeat though.

Worst Meal Abroad?

In a french hotel who’s name I can’t recall, I made the mistake of ordering steak. It came to be known as the ‘Inflatable Steak’. Suspiciously appearing approximately two minutes after I ordered, it looked fine, well-done as I had asked, but as soon as I pushed my knife in to the meat, it deflated like a balloon and retreated in to the shape of a large prune.

Dream Trip?

The Galapagos Islands. Largely due to my obsession with Darwin, but in no small part because of its natural beauty and giant tortoises.

Where Next?

My girlfriend and I are planning a snowboarding trip to Whistler in Canada. But just having moved in together for the first time, finances will probably dictate that we end up going to Butlins and buying baseball caps.
