Following last week’s post on Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, the campaign’s creators, Bowel Cancer UK, write a guest post about the signs and symptoms of the condition and tell us why the campaign is so important.

Bowel Cancer UK is encouraging men and women to be aware of the signs and symptoms of the disease this Bowel Cancer Awareness Month – April 2012.

Bowel cancer (also known as colorectal or colon cancer) is the second most common cause of cancer death in the UK, affecting both men and women. Every year over 40,000 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer and more than 16,000 people die of the disease. But this doesn’t have to be the case. Bowel cancer is very treatable, especially if it’s caught early. That’s why awareness of the symptoms is so important.

The bowel

The bowel is part of the digestive system. When we chew food, our salivary glands break it down for absorption and it enters the stomach via the oesophagus. Stomach acid helps to break it down further and it then enters the small intestine where nutrients are absorbed. The digested food enters the large bowel where water is absorbed, and the muscles of the bowel move the waste towards the rectum and anus where it leaves the body. This process takes around 24 to 72 hours.

Many bowel cancer cases start from polyps, which are small mushroom-like growths which are usually benign (harmless) and very common in people over the age of 50. Most polyps will remain harmless but some can become cancerous. A healthy diet and lifestyle may help stop polyps becoming cancerous.

The symptoms

Knowing the symptoms of bowel cancer, and visiting your doctor if you have concerns is crucial to the successful treatment of bowel cancer.

Symptoms of bowel cancer include:

• Bleeding from the bottom and/or blood in your poo
• A change in your normal bowel habit lasting three weeks or more
• Extreme tiredness for no obvious reason
• Unexplained weight loss
• A pain or lump in your tummy

Remember, most symptoms will not be bowel cancer. If you are worried about any of these symptoms, make an appointment with your doctor or speak to one of our specialist nurses on 0800 8 40 35 40 or email support@bowelcanceruk.org.uk.

Today is Columbus Day. It’s the day that many countries in the ‘New World’ celebrate as the day when the Americas were first ‘discovered’ by Europeans. But myths of Columbus and his voyage abound. Many believe that Columbus set out to prove that the world was round rather than flat. However, the truth is that Columbus set out to find a western trade route to the Far East. He didn’t even discover the New World first – that claim now goes to Leif Ericson. In fact, Columbus’ famous voyage of 1492 wasn’t plain sailing at all.

Here at World First we’re happy to say that we are able to provide cover for many people who find it hard to get cover elsewhere. We cover people up to the age of 100 as well as those with medical conditions and were the first travel insurance company to offer a policy for travellers living with HIV and AIDS. We also insure families and backpackers and those who take time out to travel the world. But would we have insured Columbus?

Er…. unlikely. Columbus was a travel insurance nightmare.

For a start he didn’t even go where he said he was going and insisted that he had found the Far East long after many others realised he had actually discovered a new continent! So, whilst we will always be more than happy to provide you with a very competitive quote for your travel insurance, we like to make sure we know where you are going – or intend going – before you travel!

As well as getting completely flummoxed by the appearance of a new continent in his way, Columbus also suffered from a catalogue of mishaps. He wrecked one of his ships, The Santa Maria, on Christmas Eve. Then he had to leave about 40 of his party behind to form a new settlement in La Natividad. This was because there wasn’t enough room on the other two ships. As if that wasn’t bad enough, he was forced to bribe his way out of mutiny when the voyage – which he initially said would take 4 weeks – stretched out into 10. As with the destination, we usually like to know the duration of stay before you go. And despite offering a discount on group bookings, we usually prefer it if the group travels together for the duration of the trip!

Then there are the medical issues. The Europeans were responsible for bringing deadly disease with them to the New World. With no immunity to diseases like small pox, the native people died in their millions. Our policies may cover all kinds of declared medical conditions for those travelling, but I doubt our underwriters would see our automatic Personal Liability cover of £2 million as being quite adequate in the case of the Europeans landing in America.

Happily, today it’s not such a big deal travelling to South America, Central America, The Caribbean and The U.S. Travellers do it all the time. And we are more than happy to insure them, no matter how long they are going for, their age or medical condition. We just ask that they tell us about it first.

Happy Columbus Day.

In this post for independent baby product retailers Justanotherbaby.co.uk we explained how to pick up a great travel insurance deal for the family that doesn’t cost the earth.

Family holidays are always exciting. What better than jetting off to make memories in the summer sun with excited kids? But sometimes it can feel like there are so many niggly bits to take care of before you leave. Don’t worry. Your travel insurance needn’t be one of them. In fact, organising travel insurance for the family can be a doddle. And we’ll show you how.

Price isn’t everything: How to find the policy that’s right for you

You won’t need to be reminded that there are premiums aplenty out there. And a sea of price comparison websites to help you compare them. But while it’s tempting to go for the cheapest policies, doing so could leave you in line for some nasty surprises should the unexpected happen. That can be costly. When the family is concerned, it’s best to know you’re covered for all eventualities.

So it’s super-important to check that your travel insurance fully complements your travel plans. Especially if you’re planning something out of the ordinary on your travels, like quad biking or scuba diving. To make it easier for consumers to compare different travel insurance policies, each insurer is obliged to provide what’s known as a Key Facts document. It gives a brief breakdown of what’s covered by a specific policy and the format is broadly the same across all insurers. At World First, all of our policies feature the same great benefits including £5 million medical expenses as well as comprehensive cover for delays cancellation and lost baggage. Our policies also automatically include cover for over 75 sports and activities.

>> Take a look at our Key Facts document now

Whichever policy you choose, remember that you have a period of fourteen days in which you can cancel your policy and get a full refund on any money you’ve spent. During that time it’s wise to have a really good look at the details of your policy. If you change your mind, it’s easy to swap for something that better suits your holiday plans.

Insure individually or as a family?

Naturally, it’s extremely important to make sure everyone in your family is covered for your holiday. So the first thing to decide is whether you want to insure each member of your family individually, or simply take out a family policy. It’s far easier (and can work out much cheaper) to insure as a family, with each traveller named on the same policy.

Single trip or annual cover?

Getting a great travel insurance deal is all about finding the package that best suits your travel habits. If you’re jetting off for a one-time only holiday as a family treat then family single-trip travel insurance will be all you need. But if you’re more frequent travellers, an annual policy could help you to save big money. It also gives you the freedom of being able to take off at the drop of a hat, without organising travel cover.

At World First, our low-cost family annual travel insurance also means that each person named on the policy can travel independently. Holidaying without the kids? You’re covered. Husband going away on an international business trip? He’s covered. Kids going travelling with the school? They’re covered. It’s already sorted. And it offers great value for money.

>> Find out more about our low-cost annual family cover

Pre-existing medical conditions? No problem.

If someone in your party has a pre-existing medical condition then it’s well worth spending a few extra minutes shopping around for your travel insurance. The premiums of many travel insurers can become prohibitively expensive once you declare that someone you are travelling with has a pre-existing medical condition. Some may even refuse to offer cover. And if you fail to declare a pre-existing medical condition, your policy will in most cases be invalid should you need to make a claim. Is it worth the risk?

But don’t worry. You don’t need to pay over the odds to get the comprehensive cover that you should be entitled to. We offer travel cover for thousands of pre-existing medical conditions. And we do it at a price that’s fair.

>> Find out more about our medical travel insurance

What if you’re travelling with elderly relatives?

Again, it’s worth shopping around if you’re holidaying with elderly relatives. Premiums can skyrocket. At World First we offer cover for travellers aged up to 100 years old. With no hidden catches.

>> Find out more about our seniors travel insurance

Remember you’re in charge

As we’ve already said, the key to getting the best travel insurance package is finding one that really suits your holiday plans. So remember you’re the customer and don’t be afraid to ask questions of your insurance provider about the depth of cover their policies give. A few minutes on the phone are well worth it for the peace of mind that comes with knowing you’re fully covered should something unexpected happen. And that means you can sit back and really enjoy your holiday. Just the way it should be.

If you would like any further advice on choosing your travel insurance or would like to know more about our policies, please contact us on 0845 90 80 161 or info@world-first.co.uk.

Like VAT it has gone up from 17.5% to 20% for holiday and travel insurance premiums, which will be a blow to people hoping for a little low cost sunshine or snow this spring.

And let’s not forget the volcanic ash of last year. The fact is that if you are travelling with a medical condition, you might need a little more than a toothbrush and spare undies to take to the airport.

And let’s not forget the volcanic ash problems earlier this year. The fact is that if you are travelling with a medical condition, you might need a little more than a toothbrush and spare undies to take to the airport.

If you are travelling with a medical condition and have purchased medical travel insurance then World First recommend that travelling with the medication you plan to use and some extra in case of delays and disasters. Whilst it may not be your fault if you were delayed it is still your responsibility to make sure you have plenty of supplies so you don’t end up creating a medical emergency through a lack of medication. In some instances, especially if you face long delays or are worried about losing your luggage, it could be worth taking twice as much as your normally need and splitting in between your hand luggage and suitcase.

We often get calls from people who are at the airport, have been delayed returning home, and are running out of medication. A bit of planning and some extra supplies could save a whole heap of hassle as it is very hard for a travel insurance firm (or anyone else for that matter) to get medication to somebody on the other side of the world. We can organize consultations with doctors so prescriptions can be obtained, but also remember that it might not be possible to get your medication whilst abroad as easily as it is when you are in the UK. This is especially the case for people who take HIV medications and have bought HIV Travel Insurance from us.

Cruises have changed much in the last ten or twenty years and whilst they have not necessarily become more “democratic” they are certainly a long way from the stuffy old image of jewellery and tuxedos. Modern cruise-goers, part by preference and part because of airline-style restrictions on luggage, are starting to travel light.

If you’ve never been on one before, the logical question to ask is “What do I pack to go on a cruise?”. Here’s a brief list…

Before you start, make a checklist

It will start with this list, but you will obviously need to add personal things to yours. It’d probably be a good idea to start well in advance. You wouldn’t want to forget something because you didn’t put it on the check list.

Are you travelling as a couple?

If you are travelling as a couple, take 2 cases and spread your essentials between them. That way, if you do lose a case you’ll both have some clothes to wear!

Have you got your travel documents?

This may sound really silly, but in my previous life as a travel agent I never ceased to be amazed at the number of people that turned up at airports or railway stations with no tickets or passports. It’s also a good idea to carry photocopies of them as well, that makes them easier to re-issue if something does happen

Reading and other essential things

This will depend on you and the type of cruise you are going on, but I’d take books on a week’s holiday on the beach, so why not a cruise? Then there’s all the paraphernalia of reading, glasses, spare glasses, business cards (you know you should really!), phrase books or dictionaries (although you can get these as apps for your iPhone these days (other smartphones exist, but frankly, they’re not as good!) and guidebooks (same applies).

Electronic equipment

We don’t go anywhere without electronic equipment these days, particularly adaptors and chargers. Have you ever gone away with a cell phone and forgotten the charger? Few tourists still use film so remember extra data cards for your camera, batteries (hint: rechargeable ones are money savers) and some kind of music player if you’re going to do any kind of repetitive sport like the treadmill

Medicine bag

Generally, a cruise ship will be stocked up on things pharmaceutical and even things medical, but don’t forget adequate supplies of any prescription drugs you take, a small first aid kit would be useful because you won’t always be on the ship, your tired, hot feet will appreciate foot lotion and some kind of bug-repellent for off-ship trips. If you do something bad to yourself and your medicine bag or the ship’s doctor can’t help you, remember your travel insurance certificate because medical care and transport, especially in the US, can get very expensive.

Dress code

This is something of a minefield and some research would be a very good idea. Daytime clothes aren’t a problem, take what you feel comfortable in but on many ships footwear is required in dining areas. Evening wear is more problematic. If you don’t want to get involved in the niceties of evening dress or formal black tie events, cruise ships are large enough for you to find a place where smart casual is perfectly acceptable. If you do like more formal occasions though, take cocktail dresses (several) or even a ball gown.

Now this is interesting! Whilst World First can’t actually book your holiday for you as we’re not travel agents, we can make planning it just that little bit easier with a new service called Essential Holiday Extras. Extras puts those little annoyances of the journey like where to park, where to stay or getting away from the crowds into a convenient, easy to use online booking system so that all you have to worry about is where you put your passport and whether or not you’ve remembered the factor 50.

Airport parking

Whenever I go away, one of the questions I always have to ask myself is “How do I get to the airport?”. Invariably, especially when I have to be there by 7 in the morning and feel bad about asking anyone to take me, the answer is to drive. Then there’s the issue of the cost. Even at regional airports these days, you can pay well in excess of £100 for a 2 week stay.

Well, help is at hand. World First has joined Essential Travel, one of the UK’s leading providers of travel extras, to make the cost of airport parking cheaper. Choose from 25 of the the UK’s airports, from Heathrow to Norwich, Blackpool and Aberdeen and plenty more in between, and you’ll find a great deal that will always be better than the one you’ll get by going direct. And then there’s the chauffeur-driven car…see the link for details.

Airport hotels

How often have you had to get up at silly o’clock just to get to the airport for an early flight, especially as check-in times are getting earlier and earlier these days? Wouldn’t it be easier just to go the night before, stress free, and get a proper night’s sleep before making it to the airport in the morning?

With World First, you can combine your car park and hotel deals and be transported to the airport for as little as £35. Choose from more than 300 hotels at 25 of the UK’s leading airports and start your holiday the night before you go.

Airport lounges

Airports can be a bit of a nightmare sometimes, especially if your flight is delayed. One way to get away from the madness is to spend some time in an airport lounge with a drink, a newspaper and a comfy chair. Most of them also have Internet access. And they’re not just the preserve of frequent flyers, Business and First Class passengers, World First can get you into 130 of them in 100 airports across the world for as little as £13.50. A little haven that will make that journey seem just that bit more, well, civilised.

Travel Insurance

Well, you knew we did that, didn’t you? Travel Insurance means that when you go away you know that if anything untoward happens, you’ll be covered. This doesn’t just mean airport delays or cancelled flights, you’ll also be covered for up to £5 million for any medical expenses or legal costs you may incur, you’ll get a 24-hour and multilingual hotline for legal advice and cover for more 75 sports. If you want to do some dangerous stuff we’ll cover you too with a taylor-made quote.

So, what I’m saying is, make the most of your holiday from start to finish. The Essential Holiday Extras from World First makes planning your holiday even easier, as well as giving you some great discounts along the way.

Check out the new section of the website for full details.

Backpackers old and new have always travelled across Europe and the world by train. As relatively characterless and antiseptic high-speed trains gradually take over the travelling landscape, it shouldn’t be forgotten that there is a wonderful architectural heritage in our train stations (and some pretty rubbish ones as well, but we’ll ignore them).

St Pancras, London

Not so much a train station as a temple to train travel. A triumph of neo-Gothic Victorian architecture, it was almost demolished in the 1960s (thank you John Betjeman) but re-furbished and re-opened in 2008 when it became the London destination for Eurostar. A destination station if ever there was one. Like many a modern station, it has become a shopping centre, but that doesn’t distract from the stunning architecture. And it does have a champagne bar, so it’s not all bad…

Strasbourg

Strangely enough, with one or two exceptions (Marseille St. Charles or the Parisian stations), the French don’t give their stations names like St. Pancras or Estatio de Francia in Barcelona. The boringly named Gare de Strasbourg is also something of an architectural marvel as befits a station located at one of Europe’s rail and political crossroads. Renovated in 2007, a new glass cocoon was added creating an interesting contrast to the 1883-designed original station.

Berlin Hauptbahnhof

Europe’s largest station with no buffers, it is also Europe’s largest two-level station. Located on the site of the original Lehrter Bahnhof station, every day more than 1100 long-distance, regional and rapid transit trains run through the 14 platforms. Another glass and steel temple (and no shortage of shops), it’s the sign of a confident, reunited nation and a statement. It somehow represents what Berlin was, a collision of two worlds, and what those worlds have become, the triumph of commercialism.

Milano Centrale

The cornerstone was laid by King Victor Emmanuel III as early as 1903, but real building work didn’t start for another 10 years and was hampered by the onset of the First World War. Influenced by Mussolini, it is often seen as representing the power of the fascist regime. It has no definite architectural style except imposing, the current station sees 600 trains a day running through its 24 platforms carrying something in excess of 320,000 people right across Italy and beyond. TGVs now run directly to Paris.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Mumbai

Indian Railways is a force of nature in itself. The world’s second largest railway company, it has 7,000 stations, employs 1.6 million people and almost 64,000 meters of track. CST, as it is known for short, is the former Bombay Victoria station and it could be said it dwarfs its not inconsiderable little sister in London. Victorian neo-Gothic in style, it is a superb example of nineteenth century railway architecture and the confidence of that age. If you can’t get to see the real one, it features a lot in the film Slumdog Millionnaire.

Grand Central Station, New York

Actually, the name is Grand Central Terminal, but popular culture knows it as a station, not a terminus. Whatever you call it, it’s the world’s largest with 44 platforms and 67 tracks on two levels. Its focal point is an enormous concourse that is usually filled with crowds. The ticket offices remain although they haven’t really been used since the introduction of ticket machines. It also gives you “68 shops and 35 places to eat and a ride home” as the web site says. Train stations have definitely changed since my day!

What with volcanic ash and airline strikes, holiday cancellation insurance has been in the news quite a lot recently, and not always in a positive light. Well, we can’t actually guarantee to pay out every time but maybe we have the next best thing.

World First has just launched two new cancellation policies that will cover you in almost any scenario you could imagine.

1. Hotelsure, holiday cancellation insurance without limits

Over the last couple of years, with people feeling the economic pinch and the falling exchange rate against the euro, there has been something of an upsurge in UK-based holidays. It seems that people have been returning to local holiday resorts in search of an alternative to the increasingly expensive beaches of the Mediterranean.

However, wherever you take your holiday, things can always happen and problems will always arise at some time or another which may mean you have to change or cancel your plans outright. That’s where Hotelsure comes in.

Quite frankly, if you have to cancel because either you or a member of your family has medical problems or has a serious accident before or during the holiday, you’ll be covered. No questions asked, and there’s no age limit or health restrictions. There’s a really simple premium calculation table and you can set it up with just one phone call to our customer service team on 0845 071 3919. Alternatively, you can download the application form from the website, fill it in and send it off.

Policies cover up to £2000 of cancellation and curtailment charges per person and include protection for your luggage, documents, money and personal accidents whilst you are away. We can’t say fairer than that, can we?

2. Cancelsure, course cancellation and curtailment insurance

Another effect of the economic situation is the increased popularity of self-improvement and vocational training courses. You can now learn to bake a cake, write a novel or take a decent picture all in the weekend.

However, they don’t come cheap. Residential weekend courses start at around £300 and can easily rise up into the thousands. That’s a big hit to take if you have to cancel. In the majority of cases, expect to lose your deposit and, especially if you have to cancel at the last minute, you could lose the whole cost.

That’s where Cancelsure comes in. Just as with Hotelsure, there are no age or health restrictions. Even if you have medical problems or a serious medical condition, we’ll still cover you. You’ll be covered if you have two cancel the course, pull out at the last minute or cut it short. In some cases, we’ll even be able to pay for unexpected additional expenses if you have to return home early.

Just download the application form or call our team on 0845 071 3929 for instant cover. You can calculate premiums with this really simple table.

So whether it’s for your holiday or for your course, Hotelsure and Cancelsure mean you can book your holiday or invest in your course in the knowledge that if there are any problems, recovering the cost won’t be one of them.

Of course, if you are going abroad on holiday (to the World Cup for example – it’s not too late) or on business, World First also provides excellent travel insurance for people with pre-existing medical conditions and for people aged up to 100.

Related posts:

It’s said that they’re the ones that found accounting and insurance a little too exciting. They spend their days among tables and charts that they use to calculate the risk of you and me falling under a bus before giving us life insurance. They spend their lives calculating whether that risk is worth taking. They’re the ones, like the man in the Treasury that holds the purse strings, that have to say “no”. They must have a lot of joy in their lives.

With all those boxes to tick that they impose before they’ll insure you, it’s not surprising that quite a few people are frustrated and disappointed that they can’t get insurance generally and travel insurance in particular. Yet there are real people and real stories behind all the numbers and many aren’t able to do what they want to do. But it’s not all bad, here’s a happy story that bucks the trend.

The traveller’s predicament

A recent customer at World First travel insurance, let’s call him George because he’s a bit shy, was in a predicament. Over the years he’s travelled a lot and has always used the same company. When he told them he was going to Canada for two months to see his granddaughter graduate, he didn’t think they’d have a problem. “Oh no!” they said, “the cost of hospital treatment is far to high for you in Canada”, and they refused point blank to cover him.

Did I say pre-existing medical condition?

It’s fair to say that George does have a few health issues, at 78 he’s on medication for high blood pressure (hey so am I and I’m MUCH younger than that!), he’s got one new knee and is due to have the other one replaced soon. He spent a lot of time calling travel insurance companies and most of them either wouldn’t touch him or gave him ludicrously high quotes. One wanted more than £1000 that was just for 31 days. Not a lot of good as he wanted to go for two months.

Here come the cavalry

Then a friend suggested he contact World First for a travel insurance quote. He called thinking they’d be the same as the rest and resigning himself to the fact that he wouldn’t be able to go to Canada. To his great surprise, he passed the medical screening process and then to his even greater surprise, the quote they gave him was much lower than expected.

I can go to Canada now

So now, British Airways and volcanic ash notwithstanding, he can go to see his granddaughter’s graduation and he’s recommending World First to all his friends.

So the answer isn’t always no everywhere, there will always be a solution out there. World First is a specialist travel insurance provider not just for pre-existing medical conditions but also cover the over 60s, over 70s and the over 80s. Drop in and see.
