We’ve had some really amazing entries for this month’s My World First competition. There have been tales of camel kissing, AK47s, communist countries, ice hotels, the Amazon, a kiss from Olly Murs, stolen underwear and a fling with a diving instructor. And that’s just the start! The best news is that there’s still time to enter and give yourself the chance of winning a Kindle.

As you might have guessed, the theme for our travel writing competition is world firsts. Get it? We want to hear about your first-time travel experiences. It could be anything you like. And judging by the entries we’ve already had, it probably will be! If it’s a first in your world then it’s one of your world firsts. Tell us about it. This blog post explains the rules and reveals just how easy it is to enter.

The winner of this month’s competition will receive a Kindle – or the equivalent value in Waterstone’s vouchers if they prefer. Viveca Koh won a Kindle in a previous World First competition and sent us this amazing photograph of her and her new toy at the ECVB powerstation in Belgium.

July 4th 2011

Busy day today? Too stretched to catch up on the best in travel news and writing? Manic Monday making it impossible to manage those blog feeds? Don’t panic. The World First Weekly Wander is our very own weekly breakdown of the best travel based web content. It’s compiled by our very own Tristan Rothwell ( @WFTristan for all you tweeters). So sit back and let him do all the work.

Hello!

I love a list (what man doesn’t?) so this week I’ve compiled my own hit parade of the best online lists. And to top it off I’ve added (last but not least, of course) an amazing video from Worldhum.

But first. On to our list.

Our first is from @NomadicNeill and it’s all about living an authentic life. I really enjoyed reading this one. There are some great principles to live by here.

Next we pay a visit to Aaron Bradford AKA @Happytimeblog who tells us how to make backpacking harder than it really needs to be. I am sure we have all made at least one of the mistakes listed here (I know I have).

So you love to travel but need to make a bit of dosh along the way? Our friends at The Gay Traveller Blog (who we follow on Twitter) may have the answer with their post 3 ways to make a living while travelling

Ok. So now you have made a bit of money – thanks to the above post – we want to help you keep it! Let @vagabondish show you how not to get scammed when on your travels

And carrying on with the staying safe theme, let’s have a look at @rtwdave and his article, 5 safety tips for taking taxis in Latin America

On a serious note, staying safe includes taking out travel insurance. Of course we’re biased but we really do offer some of the best deals around for travellers! In fact, if you’re looking for a bargain, click here and you’ll get a discount on your next World First travel insurance policy!

Right then, back to the lists. Moscow is on my bucket list and has been for a long time (ever since my school trip there was cancelled in 1982). So reading the @GapYearEscape list of the top 5 places to Visit in Moscow has made me even more determined to get there.

Let’s travel a bit closer to home now. Thanks to @travelingsavage for the great article on 9 ways to fill your days in Moray Speyside. I like the sound of sampling drams at the Whiskey Shop!

Let’s stay a while in the UK and explore five of the best markets in Manchester thanks to @blightytraveler. Makes you want to go doesn’t it?

Lastly, it’s off to find out where a couple of world travellers with a busy schedule are going to be next week. William and Kate are off to California! Let’s hope they have their travel insurance sorted. @lonelyplanet has a list of places the royal couple should visit while they are there. One simply must.

Well I promised you a video to round off this week’s “world First Weekly Wander” and this one Blew me away I found it thanks to Worldhum you can find them on Twitter Here

Tweet Tristan on @WFTristan and we’ll do our best to include it.

And by that I mean staying flexible with a holiday in a classic camper. Not only will a beautiful set of retro wheels make you the coolest kids at the camp site but you’ll also be able to go anywhere you want, safe in the knowledge that you’ve got everything you need right there with you.

Taking off in a classic camper van is nothing new. It’s a fine tradition that goes all the way back to the hippy trail and the idealistic days of freedom, peace and love on the road. And there’s nothing wrong with that. Today you don’t even have to own one to enjoy a taste of the outdoor life. There are now hundreds of companies all across the UK who are prepared to entrust you with their vintage wheels so that you too can enjoy the freedom of the open road.

Of course everyone expects a disaster when they set off in a vintage camper which is why, for people like Pete O’Connor, who runs one of the UK’s oldest hire companies, O’Connor’s Campers in South Devon, taking care of the vehicles is a priority. He says “Every one of our 15 vehicles gets serviced at the beginning of the season so we only send them out in tip top condition. They also have AA cover and an emergency kit of spares. But if the AA can’t fix it then I’m always on call to either replace the van or fix it myself. Surprisingly it doesn’t happen that often!” When you consider that the youngest of Pete’s vans is 32 years old it’s pretty amazing. The oldest, in case you were wondering, is nearly 50. Think of the places that could take you, if only it could talk.

O’Connor’s Campers will arrange a taxi to pick you up from the airport or station or can store your car for you for the duration of your rental so you won’t even have to drive hours and hours to get to where you want to go. Others, like Highland Campers, in Scotland, will let you see the highlands in 4wd weather proofed modern VWs, whilst Passage Unwritten in Hereford offer a classic camper’s looks with the reliability of a new Brazilian import. And if you want to head for the sun without risking the vagaries of the UK’s temperate climes, you can always jump on a plane and pick up a camper when you get there with people like Pura Vida Surfari near Bordeaux.

Renting a classic camper is by no means cheap. In fact, in some cases it may even be comparable to the cost of renting a small cottage for a week. But the thing about a camper van is that you can move it. So, if you don’t like the neighbours or the surroundings, you can just go somewhere else to enjoy a different view. Then there’s the excitement of waking up on a beach, up a mountain or in the countryside. That’s something you could never get from a pokey apartment in Tenby is it? No sir!

Getting out and about in a camper also means that you don’t have to live off beans on toast all week. With a two ring cooker, fridge and sink you’ve got all you need to make something fresh, local and special every night (if you fancy it). There’s a lot more you can make than you might think. There are plenty of good ideas in The Camper Van Cookbook. And none of them involve baked beans. But if all else fails, at least make sure you’ve got pesto and pasta on board. It could well save your life.

Of course there is another essential you should never travel without – proper travel insurance – especially if you travel in Europe. World First can cover all kinds of adventures with single trip travel insurance policies or cheap annual multi trip policies if you intend to take off regularly. They might not be able to prevent a mechanical disaster but they’ll take care of everything else.

Happy Camper Vanning!

It’s not something you’d ever consider in the UK ( for obvious reasons) but on a winter sun holiday, when the air temperature is 28 degrees and the sea temperature is 20 degrees or more, who could resist?

Taking off for a winter sun holiday? No doubt you’ll want to make the most of every opportunity that comes along. And what is a beach holiday without getting in the water? Exactly. If you’re the type of person who can’t lie on a sun bed all day then scuba diving must be the ultimate sea going thrill. It’s not something you’d ever consider in the UK ( for obvious reasons) but on a winter sun holiday, when the air temperature is 28 degrees and the sea temperature is 20 degrees or more, who could resist?

Of course diving can be dangerous so there are going to be a few hoops to jump through before you can swim with the fishes. Firstly – and most important – is your travel insurance. Will yours cover you for diving? Some policies will have exclusions, others will limit the depths to which you can go and some will specify that you always dive with a reputable operator (and why wouldn’t you?). World First Travel Insurance policies will cover you for diving up to 30 metres, providing you dive with an approved and qualified operator.

Diving with medical conditions

If you intend to dive you’ll be required to fill in a form whenever you dive with a PADI Certified Dive Centre. This is a declaration of your health and your physical condition. If you have a medical condition you’ll need to get this signed by a Doctor to say you are ‘fit to dive’ before you can get anywhere near the water. You may be able to do this at the resort where you are staying but of course you’ll pay – about Euros 35 in the Canary Islands for example – so you’ll save a few quid by popping along to your GP for a letter that says you are ‘fit to dive’ before you go. Alternatively you can download the PADI fit to dive declaration here to see what levels of health they will expect.

Getting a taste of the sea

Dive centres are really keen to get people in the water so there will more than likely be a bunch of options to get you started. Taster sessions or beginner’s programmes will usually take a few hours and will involve a little classroom work, some shallow water training and then a dive to about 10 metres. If you are unsure about whether or not you’ll like scuba diving or just want to try it, this is the way to do it.

Getting qualified

However, if you want to dive straight in you can do a PADI Open Water Scuba Diver Course. This course takes longer (four or five days) and involves more theory and four or five dives to about 18 metres as well as shallow water training. Once you are qualified, your PADI certificate will allow you to dive anywhere in the world. It’s a great way to spend your holiday, especially if you aren’t the sun bed type. And you get a certificate at the end of it! From here you can then go on to do all sorts of further qualifications including Dive Master, Underwater photography and Night Diving.

Checking the small print before you go

As said before, it’s vital to check that your travel insurance will cover you for scuba diving and what depth you will be able to dive to. A World First travel insurance single or annual multi trip policy will automatically cover you for diving up to 30 meters if you are qualified. So don’t forget to check before you go. Otherwise you’ll find yourself with more time on the sun bed than you might have bargained for.

Now I’m no economist but even I know that the exchange rate means everything when it comes to booking your holiday. It can mean the difference between eating out and eking out the pennies. And that can make or break your holiday, especially during these (and I quote) ‘tricky economic times’.

So whilst you might be able to get great deals on your travel insurance and super-cheap flights, it may not be a true reflection of the cost of your holiday. Some of those great holiday deals might look great you when you’re tapping away on the laptop absentmindedly in front of the telly, but don’t forget to think about how much it’s all going to cost when you get there. At the time of writing the GBP (£) was at its lowest against the Euro for almost a year, which means that if I nipped out to the Post Office today I’d get about £140 less for every £1000 worth of Euros I bought this time two years ago. That adds up to more than just a few cervezas.

Euro millions?

Of course some European countries are cheaper than others when it comes to the average cost of essentials, food and a beer. Spain, with an average price of just £2 for a lager (according to the very brilliant but probably not very scientific http://www.pintprice.com/) may well be one of the better value winter sun locations in mainland Europe for the pint lovers among us. But don’t all rush at once to the Canary Islands. With most items imported, prices there are given as a more realistic £3.39. Best go by wagon then.

The sunshine states

A big favourite among us is the good old US of A. And it’s looking like a good bet this winter based on the exchange rate. Your Post Office is going to give you $1.60 for your average British Pound. That’s almost 20 cents more for every pound than May’s low of $1.42 per pound. If you’re pushing the boat out it’s going to make a big difference to the cost of your hols. Oh yes, in case you were wondering…. £1.51 for a lager over there. Where’s my passport?

Best value winter sun destinations

So where is the best place for your winter sun this year? It’s back to the Post Office for this one. But before they sell you their travel insurance, make sure you shop around for the very best prices. If you intend to go away more than once this year, take a look at World First’s great value annual policies.

Anyway. According to their Long Haul Holiday Costs Barometer of the best value places to go long haul from the UK, the Post Office put Sri Lanka, Mexico and Kenya at the top of the pile. The list – of 22 global locations -provides plenty of gems of useful information about the real cost of travelling in many of our favourite winter sun locations. They do this by pricing up the cost (on September 1st this year) of a ‘shopping basket’ of typical holiday goods in locations all over the globe. It might not be as fun as www.pintprice.com but it may well prove to be more useful.

In terms of value, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia follow closely behind, with Australia, another favourite for Brits, proving to be more costly than ever imagined. According to the Long Haul Barometer it’s going to cost you over £100 more for the same items from Sri Lanka. So perhaps best to keep your hands in your pouches and head for the tropical beaches of Negombo, Hikkaduwa and Galle. I can heartily recommend Oonawatuna for a totally tropical feel. Today you’ll get 179 Sri Lankan Rupees for every pound. In May this year it would have been just 160. And if you like your pint it’s looking good too: just £0.95 in case you were wondering.

Whilst there are far fewer ads on the TV than there used to be, the holiday booking season is upon us. It’s time for our annual flock to the sun in search of a little time out of the rat race. So where are we going? It seems that the Costas are (finally) on the wane and our tastes are increasingly diversified. ABTA (Association of British Travel Agents) has just released its report on travel trends for 2010. They make interesting reading and show how fashions have changed in the last 10 years or so.

Glamour destinations

Top of the list will be a trip to South Africa in the second half of June and first half of July. The World Cup and a safari. What a great combination? Alternatively last year’s most popular books and films will also have an influence. The setting for the Twilight franchise, Forks, in Washington State is expecting a large influx of visitors (don’t they know how much it rains there?). Jamie Oliver’s American Road Trip should also cause increased numbers on ranched-based holidays, in the lesser known states and Indian reservations. This year’s City of Culture, Istanbul, will also be popular.

Chadventures

What on earth are “chadventures”? Holidays that allow travellers to give something back to their destination – a combination of adventure and raising money for charity, or ‘volunturism’ based breaks – are gaining currency with some tour operators that are even partnering with NGOs

Yesterday’s war zones

With the Tamil Tigers laying down arms last year, Sri Lanka looks like retrieving its popularity as a holiday destination. Bookings are likely to increase to Mexico and Thailand, two countries that had more of their fair share of troubles in 2009. There was a trickle of people going to Iraq last year and the country is even promoting itself as a holiday destination. That may be a step too far for most people though.

Egypt, Turkey and Morocco

More traditional holiday destinations will still be popular but further afield. This may have something to do with the euro exchange rate, but also investment in luxury hotels and infrastructure, including more efficient airports and roads, will influence holidaymakers looking for high standards at lower costs

Long-haul destinations

At the end of 2010, Air Passenger Duty is set for a large hike, so long haul destinations, particularly the US, Kenya, the Caribbean and Australia, will all be popular.

Other trends

Fixed-price, all-inclusive holidays should continue to be popular as well as high end accommodation without big price tags – Spain now offers luxury options to broaden its appeal and even Butlins has taken the upmarket route to entice holidaymakers (and businesses). Cruises look set to increase their record passenger numbers of 2009 and will shake off their boring image next year with a mixture of innovations tempting holidaymakers who want a little more. In 2010 will we see cruisers being able to buy vouchers to drink as much as they want and book dedicated naked cruises (seriously)? Las Vegas, Dominican Republic and Turkey will all benefit from increased flights making travel even easier. Holidays will be influenced by films and books. Forks, Washington State, the setting of the Twilight teen vampire saga, experienced a 10-fold increase in visitor numbers in 2009, that’s a trend that probably won’t be reversing any time soon. Shopaholics will take advantage of a more stable dollar/pound exchange rate and get inspiration from Sex and the City 2 and to indulge themselves in New York. And then there’s the opening of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando, Florida. Aspiring authors dream of their books being turned into films, but Theme Parks? Surreal.

Research essential

The quest for new destinations will lead holiday makers to visit countries with which they are not familiar. They have different laws and customs so doing research is essential. The first port of call is the Foreign and Commonwealth office web site, but a plethora of other sites exist to make your trip just that bit better.

Increased life expectancy and improved pensions have meant that baby boomers that have reached the age of retirement are increasingly unwilling to sit in front of the fire waiting for the grim reaper to come along to tell them there time’s up.

So, do you fancy a slide down the piste for the first time but you’re more enthusiastic about the après-ski than the activity that precedes it? Here’s a few tips to help you:

It’s a sports activity

If the last time you did any sport in anger was playing cricket or football with the grandchildren, you’ll probably need a bit of preparation. That doesn’t necessarily mean signing up for the gym months before you go away, but don’t move straight from couch to piste in one go. Get plenty of exercise and think about warming up before putting your skis on and warm down when you take them off. You’ll ache a lot less.

Indoor slopes

There aren’t too many “real snow” artificial slopes in the UK, but it may well be worth while having some lessons and a dry run on an indoor slope before you leave. You’ll be able to decide whether or not you like it, you won’t waste time trying to get to grips with things when you are away and you’ll be one step ahead of your peers.

Falling on your backside is good

Really…. Even if you start with lessons (and you should) and don’t go gung-ho from the off, you will spend some time sliding down the slope on your rear-end rather than on your skis. people will laugh at you and you may be advised to laugh at yourself, it’s all part of the learning curve. Practice makes perfect and it’ll all come good in the end.

Your skis are not your enemy

Even if you think so. Your skis will be very good at getting you to the bottom of the slope. After all, that’s what they were designed to do. However, your instructor is there to help you train them so that you are in command and so they get you there in a timely manner and preferably on your feet rather than on your bum.

What about the insurance?

So this is a travel (insurance) blog. Of course we’re going to talk about insurance. Indulge us a little. One of the fastest growing areas of travel insurance is to cover the over 70s, it covers pre-existing conditions and, as long as you don’t go silly and start wandering off-piste, you can behave just like the young ‘uns – even go snowboarding. How cool is that?

Why on earth do it in the first place?

There are many people that think that climbing to the top (or almost the top) of a mountain only to hurtle at breakneck speed right back down again is sheer madness. So why do it?

The feeling of smugness that you’ve actually managed to ski down to the bottom of a run and successfully stop yourself for the first time.

Looking back up the mountain that you have just raced down, however slight the slope, never fails to leave you with a feeling of immense respect for the power of nature.

There is really nothing like the cold fresh mountain air blowing on your face combined with the midday sun beating down on you. That lethal combination of sunburn and snow can be quite surreal at first. You have sunburn but there’s no beach. Euh?

If you want to get away from it all, it’s one of the best solutions. Chances are you’ll spend a lot of time concentrating on staying on your two feet, so skiing really is the perfect way to get away from all your woes!

Since British regulations on where you could get married were relaxed there’s been a steady growth in people wanting to get hitched in the four corners of the world – and taking there guests with them. The British embassy in the country where you want to get married will be your first port of call for information on tying the knot, but you’d be well-advised to:

Contact the local authorities in the country for more detailed and practical advice – here’s a list of foreign embassies in the UK

Find out what specific documents those local authorities require. They may take months to prepare and you really don’t want to turn up at the alter to find you haven’t got your granny’s birth certificate or some other obscure document.

Check if you need visas to enter the country. British passport holders can go to 152 countries so you’ll probably have most of your ideal destinations covered, but some places such as Australia and the United States require some formalities before you leave.

Check if you need to provide proof of residency in the country – in some cases this is over 30 days

If you are planning to marry in a tropical country, visit your GP as soon as possible before you go to check what vaccinations you’ll need

Buy adequate travel insurance – you may also want to buy specialist insurance which will cover the ceremony

Get written quotes from wedding planners, venues or other services before you sign contracts, just as you would at home

Remember any guests you invite will need to obtain visas, get relevant vaccinations and purchase travel insurance too. You wouldn’t want your best man who’s from Uzbekestan to be refused entry. Send any information you get to the as well, it’ll save them searching and getting it wrong.

Get legal advice to check your marriage is legal in the UK. You won’t get a UK wedding certificate but you can deposit your local one at the General Register Office – but you’ll have to get it translated first.

If you want to have a Civil Partnership Ceremony overseas, things can get complicated. The Foreign office can help.

If you’re getting married in Italy, you’ll need a Nulla Osta (an Italian Certificate of Non-Impedement) or in France, you’ll need a Certificat de Coutume (Certificate of Custom Law)

The World Cup draw has been “kind” lets say. Thousands of people would have started making plans on the evening of 4th December to travel to South Africa in June and July 2010. World Cup fever starts here. So what should you be thinking of before setting off on a trip like that to the other side of the world.

1. Take warm clothes. Just because it’s in June and July, don’t forget it’s in the Southern Hemisphere so it’ll be winter. It could be as cold as it was standing on the terraces at Fulham’s Craven Cottage before they built up the stand to stop the cold air blowing in off the Thames. The effect was that of a wind tunnel. Freezing.

2. Book your accommodation well in advance. Now that the draw’s been made, we know exactly where all the teams are playing in the group stages and can make calculated guesses at what will happen in the knock-out rounds. This is the most popular sports event in the world and many hotels and guest houses are already full. The point about winter applies here as well, unless you’re very well equipped, it will be too cold to camp.

3. Don’t forget your insurance. Without it, you won’t be covered if you have an accident and have to be repatriated. The British Foreign Office web site quotes more than £25,000 for medical bills and also advises you insure your personal belongings due to high levels of crime in some areas. Like it or not, you’ll be a target.

4. It’s a big country. Cape Town and Johannesburg are 1400 kilometres apart (the same distance as London to Warsaw) which will take a day to travel by train, even more by car. Make sure you give yourself enough time.

5. If you’re thinking about hiring a car, book it with your accommodation because the limited supply there is will be taken very quickly. If you do manage to book one, remember the rules of the road may not be the same as what you’re used to. For example, when you get to a four-way intersection, priority goes to the car that got there first. None of this priority to the right rubbish. The Foreign Office doesn’t say what happens if two cars arrive at the aforementioned intersection together.

6. If you can’t get a car, you’ll be using public transport. Make sure you use licensed taxis and official public transport.

7. Check your passport. British citizens don’t need a visa to go to South Africa for less than 90 days. However, your passport must be valid for 30 days after you plan to leave the country and the Foreign Office advises keeping two pages blank in it for all the stamps you’ll be getting.

8. If you want to party, leave it until after the game. If you appear to be a little too well-oiled trying to get into a ground, you won’t get in. The same goes if you’re heard spouting racist or xenophobic chants, but you wouldn’t do that anyway, would you? As for partying, (almost) anything goes. Although remember that you’re in the country with one of the highest rates of HIV and AIDS in the world, so wear a hat at all times.

9. Get vaccinated and take all the medication you need. If you’re on medication, get your repeat prescriptions before you go. Vaccination requirements vary from one country to another, check with your local health authorities for details.
